This multifaceted assignment challenged my group to research a topic of importance and to communicate our findings and personal thoughts to our class. We answered the question of how Netflix and other streaming services fulfill users' demand for gratifying content. Utilizing Denis McQuail's four main needs (personal relationships, personal identity, diversion, and surveillance), we better understood the specific reasons for why this model is successful. I personally led the research on of the personal identity function, relating the concept to films like Jerry Maguire and 21. From completing this project, I learned the need to take a step back and analyze our role in the greater world of media. Our willingness to be flexible and adjust to the different times directly impacted the effectiveness of this group project.

This assignment allowed for creativity and critical thinking. Overall, this developed an understanding of the meaning of semiotics: studying signs and symbols and the meanings they convey. I chose to relate this to an example of the Philadelphia Eagles logo and a scene from the movie, Molly's Game. It was eye-opening to see how much thought goes into the making of ideas like these. The beauty of semiotics is that there are so many interpretations of the same sign; it is about how you choose to interpret it. The smallest signals (thumbs up, color of shoes, hand gestures, body language) all play a large role in the communication of certain signifiers. The main lesson I took away from this assignment was the value in seeing the world through a more analytical lens: asking questions and challenging norms.
